Abstract:
Background : Sleep has been considered as occurring under the responsibility of
occupational therapy practice since it is crucial for physical, cognitive, and emotional
functioning as well as for participation and performance at work. Sleep and other basic
needs must be met for both physical and mental well-being. Concepts like sleep
latency, total sleep duration, and regular sleep schedule are all part of the concept of
sleep quality. In people with mental illnesses, poor sleep quality can lead to symptoms
like fatigue, concentration loss, hallucination, delusion, and loss of interest.
Aim : The aim of the study is to evaluate the overall sleep quality and it’s associated
factors among patients with mental illness using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index
(PSQI).
Methods : The study used a cross-sectional quantitative design to conduct a face-to
face interview among 140 participants who were the patients with mental illness. All
the participants were taken through a purposive sampling technique. The age range of
the participants was (15 -60) years, both male n= 69 (49.3%) and female n= 71
(50.7%), where individuals were diagnosed with a mental illness. A Self developed
sociodemographic questionnaire and standardized questionnaires Pittsburgh Sleep
Quality Index (PSQI) were used to collect data to know the overall sleep quality and
it's associated factors among patients with mental illness. The data was analyzed using
the SPSS software.
Results : The results mainly showed that sleep quality among the participants was
poor, with 94.3% experiencing poor sleep and only a small proportion about 5.7%
reporting good sleep. The mean sleep quality score was 1.94 , SD (± 0.233), indicating
overall poor sleep among the participants. Overall, the findings highlight a high rate
of poor sleep quality in this population.
Conclusion : The findings of the current study discussed that sleep disruption is a
common part of the presentation of mental health conditions. Recognizing and
addressing the two-way connection between mental health and sleep disorders holds
great potential for enhancing the well-being of those suffering from these issues. It is
essential to keep increasing public education and awareness of the importance of
treating sleep disorders and mental health issues. Enhancing mental health services in
Bangladesh requires more well-designed epidemiological and clinical research.
