significant disruption of personal and as well as social performance. It has significant
effect on patients and their participation in social life but in Bangladesh, there is limited
information on personal and social performance of the schizophrenic patients.
Aim: This study aimed to assess the personal and social performance among patients
with schizophrenia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 124 schizophrenia patients
who were receiving treatment at selected hospitals and day care centre in Bangladesh.
Data was collected by face-to-face interview using a sociodemographic questionnaire
and the Personal and Social Performance (PSP) scale. Data were analyzed using
descriptive statistics and due to the non-normal data distribution, Mann-Whitney U and
Kruskal - Wallis test were performed. Linear regression analyses were also conducted.
Results: The average PSP score was 38.72, (SD ±19.48) which indicates the low to
moderate level of functioning. Significant associations were observed between PSP
scores and household activity involvement, anger or aggression control, personal
hygiene, and family and social relationships (p < .05). These variables were identified
as significant predictors of functional performance in the regression analysis.
Conclusion: The study says those who suffer from schizophrenia have significant
impairment of personal and social functioning. Personal and social performance
depends on performance and quality of functional engagement, practice of self-care,
regulation of emotion and relationships.
