Abstract:
Background: A major depressive disorder (MDD) is a mental disorder that requires
by an all-consuming and intractable low mood with low self-esteem and by a loss of
interest or pleasure in activities that used to bring them pleasure (Sarsak, 2020). While
pharmacological and cognitive-behavioral treatments remain central, there is growing
recognition of the value of recreational group therapy (RGT) in enhancing mood,
motivation, and social interaction. However, the experiences and perceptions of
caregivers-who play a role in supporting MDD patients-remain underexplored,
particularly in the context of Bangladesh.
Aim: The aim of this study to explore how caregivers feel about the value and benefits
of recreational group therapy for patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
Method: The phenomenological approach of qualitative research design was chosen to
conduct study. Data collection questionnaire was followed self-developed interview
guide. Data was collected by conducting face-to-face in depth semi-structured
interview. Eight participants who have caregiving experience for MDD in recreational
group therapy. Data was analyzed by thematic analysis according Braun and Clark’s
six step.
Result: The findings explored in-depth information regarding caregiver perceptions
about recreational group therapy for patients with MDD with six themes: i) Awareness
and Understanding of RGT , ii) Emotional and Cognitive Impact on Caregivers, iii)
Perceived Benefits and Observed Patient Improvement, iv) Caregiver–Patient
Relationship Dynamics, v) Challenges and Barriers in RGT, vi) Recommendation and
Continuity.
Conclusion: In the study, Caregivers perceived recreational group therapy as a valuable
and effective intervention for patients with Major Depressive Disorder. Although many
caregivers initially had limited awareness of RGT, their understanding improved after
observing patient participation and outcomes. Enhanced emotional regulation, social
engagement and motivation were identified as the main benefits of RGT, which also
improved caregivers’ well-being. In this study, repetitive activities and a lack of variety
for various age groups were detected. Overall, the study suggested that personalized
activities as well as increased caregiver involvement were required to improve
recreational group therapy for MDD.
