“Cognitive impairment among burn injury patient”

Abstract

Worldwide among the leading causes of death and disability, burn injury is a major one. Approximately 265,000 deaths occur each year due to burns on a global scale. Burn injury keeps a great impact on physical, psychological and social life. Cognitive impairment is an important cause of disability among the burn injury population as there is an association between burn and cognitive impairment. So this study was meant to determine the cognitive impairment after burn injury and severity of cognitive impairment after burn injury. This study was conducted by using cross sectional prospective survey method in Burn and Plastic Surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Acid Survivors Foundation. Participants were selected by using purposive sampling. Data was collected by using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) questionnaire and analyzed by using descriptive statistical analysis method. Among 72 participants 20.80% (15) participants had definite cognitive decline. Among these participants 19.40% (14) participants had mild cognitive impairment and significant cognitive impairment also had 19.40% (14) participants. And only 1.40% (1) participants had profound cognitive impairment. Keywords: Cognitive impairment, Burn injury
