Abstract:
Purpose: This study investigates post-rehabilitation challenges faced by stroke survivors
in Bangladesh, including physical limitations, financial strain, limited follow-up care,
emotional distress, social reintegration issues, gender expectations, and caregiver support.
Insights aim to guide improvements in rehabilitation services for sustainable recovery and
quality of life. Objectives: To examine the diverse challenges stroke survivors face post
rehabilitation, including physical, financial, healthcare, emotional, and social aspects, to
inform improvements in support systems. Methodology: This qualitative study involved
semi-structured interviews with 10 stroke survivors who had completed their rehabilitation.
Participants shared their experiences, and with thematic analysis core challenges were
identified. Results & Discussion: Seven main challenges emerged. Survivors struggled
with physical limitations in daily activities, financial strain from healthcare costs and lost
income, and limited access to follow-up care due to financial/logistical barriers. Emotional
distress, such as depression, was prevalent, compounded by social isolation and difficulties
reintegrating into the community. Gender roles added complexity, with women facing
increased caregiving burdens and men experiencing distress over lost roles as providers.
Additionally, insufficient family and caregiver support left survivors feeling burdensome.
Conclusion: Stroke survivors in Bangladesh face complex post-rehabilitation challenges
shaped by physical, financial, social, and cultural factors. These findings emphasize the
need for patient-centered, community-based, and gender-sensitive support to improve
long-term recovery and quality of life. Collaborative efforts from healthcare providers,
policymakers, and community groups are essential to creating effective, accessible
rehabilitation programs.
