Abstract:
Introduction: As osteoarthritis impact on the hips and knees, it is thought to be the fourth
most common cause of disability globally. Patients with OA are becoming more and more
common every day. Purpose: The purpose of this study to explore the effectiveness of
muscle energy technique to strengthening of knee in osteoarthritis patients. Objectives: To
evaluate the effectiveness of muscle energy technique to strengthening of knee in
osteoarthritis patients. Methodology: This study was a randomized control trial
quantitative type of research which is single blinded. Total 40 patients were taken in this
research on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria and divided into 2 groups. One
group is control group and other group is experimental group. Each group has 20 patients.
Both groups were taken 12 sessions in 4 weeks. Control group were taken conventional
physiotherapy and experimental group were taken muscle energy technique with
conventional physiotherapy. All subjects were evaluated by Numeric Pain Rating Scale,
Goniometer for measuring Range of Motion and Manual Muscle Testing for measuring
muscle strength. Results: The findings of this study were carried out by Mann Whitney U
test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank test, independent t test and Paired t test. Mean age of
experimental group was 52.85 and the control group was 53. Gender distribution of this
study were male 70% and female 30%. In pain, range of motion and muscle strength
maximum movement had improved and significant level is <005. Discussion: Khuman et
al., 2014 conducted a study in 90 patients in 3 groups, the results of that study showed that
Muscle Energy Technique is effective in reducing pain, increase range of motion and in
knee osteoarthritis participants. Choksi and Tank, 2016 conducted a study, where there
were 120 participants devided in two groups one is group A MET and another is group B
Control. The result of that study showed that subjects belonging to MET group were able
to increase the hamstring flexibility and quadriceps strength compared to the control group.
Conclusion: This study had concluded that muscle energy technique had improved
strength of knee and also reduce pain and increase range of motion.
Key words: Muscle Energy Technique, Osteoarthritis, Strengthening.
