Abstract:
Background: After the transition to adulthood pediatric-onset spinal cord injury face
significant more challenges, that impact their psychosocial status. Without proper
strategy, their life will be isolated and overwhelming. Therefore, there is a need for
proper resources and research among this group for their development especially in
lower middle-income countries like Bangladesh.
Aim: the aim of this research was to identify the current psychosocial status of adult
with pediatric-onset spinal cord injury after discharged from the Center for the
Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), Bangladesh.
Methods: The study followed a cross-sectional quantitative design and conducting by
telephone survey among 61 participants who received rehabilitation services from the
CRP. The research collected 10 years of data. Ryffs psychological wellbeing scale to
know the psychological wellbeing and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social
Support to know the social support were used to collect data. SPSS 20 version was used
to conduct the descriptive analysis.
Results: the study consist of 44 males and 17 females with the average current age of
(20.38±1.428). The study reflected a high level of social support though psychological
wellbeing indicating moderate wellbeing among adults with POSCI among. The study
also highlights the social support and psychological wellbeing have a weak but positive
correlated with each other among the study sample.
Conclusions: The study contributed to better understanding the psychosocial status
among adults with POSCI, in Bangladesh. It reflects the importance of shaping
rehabilitation systems to address psychological issues by effectively planning
intervention, creating community coping strategies and targeted interventions. It also
highlights the important role of peer support in growing empathy, emotional support,
and social inclusion in the community for individuals with POSCI.
